We recently went deep sea fishing in IslaMorada, Florida to celebrate Teek’s 50th birthday. We stayed at Bud N Mary’s Marina and chartered the boat “That’s Right” for a full day.
We could not have asked for a better day to be out on the water. The weather was pleasant with almost no winds and a comfortable 75 degrees. We left at 7 AM sharp and headed out several miles. We started out fishing for bait fish and caught about a dozen on shrimp. We could have bought a dozen bait fish at the marina however they cost about $90 a dozen.
We then went to about 20 feet of water, anchored, and dropped our lines baited with shrimp to the floor of the ocean. We caught 20 to 30 yellow fin snappers and several blue runners using Penn spinning reels and Villain Rods.
We then went trolling using Santiago casting reels and Beast Rods. Although we were hoping to catch many big fish, the murky water prevented the fish from seeing our bait. Unfortunately, the 3 previous days had been extraordinarily windy and had muddied the waters.
Nonetheless, we had a blast. We caught a lot of yellowtail snapper and took them to a local restaurant that evening. The chef cooked our fish for us three different ways: almondine, jalepeno style, and the restaurant favorite style.
We will be going back in the summer to celebrate John John’s 50th birthday. That is when we will be catching the “big fish”!
